This hand buff is attached to a bench vice. It is simply a board with some padding attached and a cover of chamois, silk velvet, or cotton flannel. The reddish substance is powdered rouge.
A second hand buff without rouge is used as a final step to remove any rouge from the plate prior to sensitizing.
